During the Belgian Presidency of the EU, Bulgaria and Romania were admitted to Schengen by air and sea, said Belgian Ambassador to Bulgaria Frederic Meurice, who presented the achievements of his country's presidency so far to the participants in an international youth seminar. The forum is organized by the National Student Confederation together with the Union of European Federalists and the European Youth Movement under the Erasmus + Programme of the EU with the support of the Human Resource Development Center, the National Student House and the Bureau of the European Parliament in Bulgaria.
The diplomat said that among the highlights of the Belgian Presidency is the policy of enlargement of the EU, which is a very important topic especially for the countries in the Balkan region, as well as compliance with budgetary rules.
As an ambassador to Bulgaria, he works for Bulgaria to become a better partner of the EU, a country that contributes to the common efforts for progress, for what the EU should be, as well as for the development of bilateral relations.
He noted that European standards are at a crossroads because of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, the pandemic, the energy crisis, disinformation, extreme climate change, the dramatic situation in Gaza and other challenges that need an adequate response.
The Belgian Presidency has set six main priorities, Frederic Meurice said. Among them are to protect the rule of law, democracy, strengthening competition, capital markets, the platform for strategic technologies, finalizing legislation on artificial intelligence, amendments and additions to cybersecurity rules.
