Mustafa Emin, an advisor in the team of Defence Minister Todor Tagarev announced his resignation in a Facebook post Tuesday. He said he is coming down "to end the attack against the Defence Minister and the government".
Emin - and the Defence Minister - have recently come under pressure after a nurse in Sofia's Pirogov emergency hospital complained in a Facebook post that Emin used his position to secure preferential treatment for his child, who was with a minor injury, and threatened the hospital staff when they refused to do as asked. The nurse's post was reposted by the Pirogov Hospital, whose management said that the staff involved in the episode, acted by the established rules of procedure and while the minister's advisor did not act aggressively, he was verbally abusive.
The Defence Minister said that what his advisor told him about the incident is far departed from the hospital staff's account of events. The Yes, Bulgaria! party, where the ministerial advisor was among the founders, said they would investigate the matter before they react.
In his Facebook post, Emin says he would "defend his name and make sure to prove the truth about his communication with the Pirogov Hospital staff".
He "freezes" his membership of the Yes, Bulgaria! National Council to allow an impartial check.
He says he has become the target of a smear campaign and warns that "such campaigns will intensify and aim to undermine people's confidence, cause conflicts and provoke aggression". He calls on people to stand up against this threat.
