The Sofia Regional Prosecution Office has charged Kristian Hristov with illegal recording of information, the prosecutors said on Saturday. Between May 25, 2018 and May 30, 2023, Hristov used, without due authorization, a special device for secret collection of information. He recorded meetings between the accused Petar "the Euro" Petrov with various Bulgarian citizens and magistrates in Sofia.

Hristov was released on BGN 1,000 bail and was banned from leaving the country.

Petar Petrov, a lawyer in private practice, headed the investigation department of the Sofia City Prosecution Office in 2013-2015 and is alleged to have played a key role in various corrupt schemes.

As part of the same pre-trial proceedings, Petar Petrov is wanted by Europol and the Schengen Information System. An alert has been put on the Schengen Information System for Petrov's child, the Sofia Regional Prosecution Office said.

On May 31, Hristov was arrested on his way into the Bulgarian News Agency's building where he was expected to give a news conference on "Inside the Eight Dwarfs and state capture methods". The Eight Dwarfs case took its name from a restaurant in Sofia which had doubled as an office for Petrov.
