An exhibition dedicated to late Bulgarian artist Margarit "Margo" Tsanev will open at the Bulgarian Culture Institute (BCI) in Berlin on January 28 at 7 p.m. local time, the Institute has said, adding that admission is free.

Titled Flight, the exhibition is curated by Olimpia Nikolova-Daniel. "In 2025, at the invitation of the BCI in Berlin, the Ilia Petrov National School of Fine Arts, Debut Gallery, and Streletz ART Gallery are commemorating the 80th birth anniversary of Margarit 'Margo' Tsanev, an artist who will forever remain 24 years old,"  Nikolova-Daniel said.

The exhibition features a lesser-known part of Tsanev's ouvre: watercolour landscapes from his high school years in Sofia, Melnik, Koprivshtitsa, and Teteven, provided by Debut Gallery. Also on display will be drawings from his student years, owned by the artist’s family. These include portraits, self-portraits, landscapes, and works that reflect a defiance against the system. Some artworks examine religious or mythological themes, while others explore love and death.

"Flight is an exhibition that showcases some of the work of an artist whose rebellious spirit challenged the false dominant values of the 1960s," the BCI said.

Margarit "Margo" Tsanev was born in Teteven (North Central Bulgaria) on October 30, 1944. He graduated from the Art High School in Sofia in 1964 and was admitted to study Sculpture at the Academy of Arts in 1965. In 1968, the Academy’s dean temporarily suspended his student rights for one year, prompting Tsanev to leave Sofia. Tsanev passed away in January 1969.
