Addressing GERB MPs from the parliamentary rostrum at Tuesday’s sitting of the National Assembly, Mustafa Karadayi – leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) said that if “this vicious wedding” happens, Bulgarian citizens will storm the Parliament building, as they did on January 10, 1997. Karadayi was referring to GERB’s negotiations with the Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) alliance for forming a regular government on a rotating basis.

Karadayi recalled that May 29, 2023, marked the 34th anniversary of the "deportation of 360,000 Bulgarian citizens" [referring to the mass emigration in 1989 of over 350,000 ethnic Turks to Turkiye in the wake of an internationally condemned campaign undertaken by the communist regime to force the Muslim minority, including ethnic Turks and Muslim Roma to adopt Slavic names]. In his words, 34 years after these events Bulgarians are witnessing the total collapse of statehood and democracy once again. “We are witnessing the deinstitutionalization of the state. ‘The smart and the beautiful [presumably referring to CC-DB representatives] are trying to present themselves as substitutes for state institutions. We know from the media that there are no state institutions [to exert their powers] when regarding some arrogant, self-sufficient and self-obsessed empowered violators of the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria. They themselves pretend to be Rambos and illegally arrest opposition party functionaries, invade the homes of Bulgarian citizens and mock disadvantaged people. Today they are trying to usurp all power and the security services," the MRF leader emphasized.
