The Constitutional Court of Romania has annulled the first round of the presidential elections following an emergency meeting of the magistrates earlier in the day, local media said on Friday. The court said in a statement it "annuls the entire electoral process regarding the election of the president of Romania". "The government will establish a new date for the election... as well as a new calendar program for carrying out the necessary actions," the news media reported.

Judges from the Constitutional Court of Romania gathered for an extraordinary session following a surge of requests to annul the presidential elections. These requests are grounded in documents declassified by Romania's Supreme Council for National Defence, indicating that the campaign of presidential candidate Calin Georgescu was influenced by external manipulation.

Local media called the Constitutional Court's emergency meeting "unprecedented".
