The Istanbul Governor's Office has issued an order to block all approaches to the central Beyoglu district in order to prevent a planned demonstration by anti-violence organizations on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
A written order from the Istanbul Governor's Office, published in the Turkish media, states that on Monday, November 25, all mass events, demonstrations, rallies and processions, are prohibited in the central Taksim Square, the central Istiklal avenue, as well as in other places from midnight on Monday untul midnight on November 26.
The Istanbul Governor's Office stated that events are not allowed due to possible intervention by groups or individuals who support terrorism or who could threaten public order and the security of citizens.
Hundreds of women took part in a protest demonstration against violence against women in the Kadikoy district on the Asian side of Istanbul on Sunday, the T24 website reported. The protest was organized at the initiative of dozens of human rights organizations and women's movements.
In an address to the media read at the demonstration, the participants demanded the return of the Istanbul Convention on the Protection of Women, which was repealed by the ruling Justice and Development party government. They also demanded the implementation of the provisions of Law No. 6284 on the Protection of the Family and the Prevention of Violence against Women.
According to the We Will Stop Femicide Platform, 48 women were killed in Turkiye last month, a record number in the last 14 months.
