A loud explosion in an apartment building in the municipality of Braila has been reported by Romania's General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations. Sixteen apartments, seven cars and a kindergarten nearby were affected by the explosion.
A total of 49 people (40 adults, 9 minors) were affected. They spent the night with relatives and refused to be transported to a specialised medical centre.
The owner of the apartment where the explosion occurred is a former prosecutor and lawyer. The 71-year-old man was taken to hospital with first-degree burns. A woman suffered a panic attack.
The cause of the explosion is being clarified, but it is most likely a gas leak.
The area has been secured.
