All pupils on the Bulgarian team participating in the Balkan Physics Olympiad have won medals at the sixth edition of the competition hosted by Nikšić, Montenegro. Ilia Vasilev snatched the gold, Alexander Nikolov and Petar Petrov silver, and Raya Shikova bronze, the Union of Physicists in Bulgaria said.
The Olympiad was organized by the Balkan Physical Union and the Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro, with the financial support of the European Physical Society.
In 2024, the competition brought together participants from nine member countries of the Balkan Physical Union: Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia. Three visiting teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, and Austria also joined the Olympiad, bringing the total number of participants to 48.
The participation of the Bulgarian team in the Olympiad was organized by the Union of Physicists in Bulgaria and was partly funded by the Education and Science Ministry. The team leaders are Maya Zhekova from the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia’s Faculty of Physics and Liliya Atanasova from the Medical University of Sofia.
