"After 13 years of tireless work, Bulgaria finally took its rightful place in the Schengen family," European Parliament (EP) President Roberta Metsola told a joint press conference with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov in Strasbourg on Tuesday, emerging from a meeting with him at the EP.
Metsola noted that "Bulgaria is in the last miles of preparations to join the [euro] zone," and expressed support for the country's efforts "to move forward quickly on this." "Like Schengen, the euro is an indispensable part of our daily lives," she added.
Prime Minister Zhelyazkov said his government's main political goal in the coming months will be to defend a state budget scheme which will ensure stability of the public finances.
He pointed to the need for Sofia to continue absorbing funding from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility and to speed up the projects under the corresponding national plan. "We also need to talk about energy security and connectivity," Zhelyazkov said, noting that this is important for businesses.
