Bulgarian Transport Minister Georgi Gvozdeikov and the US Ambassadors in Sofia and Athens, George Tsunis and Kenneth Merten, met here Tuesday to discuss improving North-South connectivity. "Improving regional infrastructure connectivity along the North-South route will not only ensure an alternative and cheaper route for goods, but will also meet the growing travel and trade between Bulgaria, Romania and Greece after this country's accession to Schengen," Gvozdeikov said as quoted by his Ministry.

The Minister stressed the importance of the declaration adopted during a trilateral meeting of the Heads of Government of Bulgaria, Greece and Romania, held in October 2023 in Euxinograd, by which the three countries declared their desire to develop a North-South transport corridor. The corridor would provide better multimodal connectivity between the Black Sea and Aegean ports and would be a good alternative to crossing the Black Sea and the Bosphorus, Gvozdeikov added.

The sides also discussed a project submitted by Bulgaria and Romania for a feasibility study for a second bridge across the Danube at Ruse-Giurgiu under the Connecting Europe Facility.
