The Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water said Friday it is seeking to participate in an environmental impact assessment of a project for building an incinerator for medical and animal waste in Giurgiu, across the Danube from the Bulgarian city of Ruse. The Ministry requests additional information related to the protection of air quality and other environmental components in the implementation of the project.

In a view of the importance of the issue for the citizens of Ruse, Environment Minister Julian Popov suggests that a public discussion of the investment proposal be held.

The Bulgarian side has also sent to the Romanian authorities opinions received during consultations in Bulgaria.

On 1 September, a protest took place in Ruse against the construction of the Giurgiu incinerator. The Regional Environmental and Water Inspectorate in Ruse has sent a negative opinion on the project proposal.

The project is also met with opposition in Giurgiu.
