Turkish national R.A., 64, has been charged with smuggling silver jewellery from Turkiye into Bulgaria en route to Serbia, the Plovdiv Appellate Prosecution Office said in a press release on Tuesday.

On August 6, the man carried silver rings, bracelets, chains, medallions, chokers and earrings totalling 21,776 grammes to an aggregate value of BGN 152,432 across the border, which constitutes a criminal offence under the Penal Code.

The artefacts were found by customs offices in a secret compartment on board the bus driven by R.A. An expert examination identified the goods as made of 92.5% silver.

The smuggled goods have been impounded as physical evidence.

The accused has been released on BGN 3,000 bail, he is barred from leaving the country and has been ordered to surrender his passport.
