The Bulgarian embassy in Athens condemned the behaviour of the Bulgarian who was detained in Kavala after he brought down the Greek flag at the port of the northern Greek city.

Following is the text of the Embassy's comment:

In reply to your inquiry regarding the incident with a Bulgarian citizen on August 4, 2023, at the port of Kavala, the Bulgarian Embassy in Athens has the following comment:

The person in question was detained immediately after his illegal act at the port of Kavala by the Greek police authorities. After his detention and police interrogation, he was released under clearly defined conditions. In violation of these conditions, the person travelled by car to the Greek-Bulgarian border. The Bulgarian police authorities at the border crossing Ilinden-Exohi detained him and he was subject to police interrogation. After the police interrogation had been carried out, he was released pending possible further proceedings.

It should be noted also that the person in question has been previously convicted in Bulgaria for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The behaviour of the person in question during his stay in Kavala on August 4 and 5, 2023, is absolutely unacceptable and in total contradiction with the excellent good neighbourly relations between Bulgaria and Greece, as well as in the context of the membership of the two neighbouring and friendly countries in the European Union.
