Fifty Bulgarian firefighters who helped Greece put out wildfires have returned, the Interior Ministry said on Friday. They were welcomed by Chief Commissioner Alexander Dzhartov, head of the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Population Protection, who thanked them for their professionalism during the effort to extinguish wildfires on Corfu.
Dzhartov said: "You have made your country proud by lending a timely hand to our Greek colleagues. I highly appreciate your work. Unfortunately, you will have little time to relax in the peak of the summer as things are getting complicated in Bulgaria too."
Chief Inspector Kaloyan Donchev, who led the Bulgarian unit, thanked Dzhartov and gave him the plaquette with which Greece thanked the firefighters for their help.
The Bulgarian unit left for Greece with 15 fire engines and special equipment on July 22. They were first deployed in Thessaloniki and then left for Corfu. The assistance was provided through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
