A scientific session will mark the 120th anniversary of the outbreak of the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising – a mass revolt of the Macedonian and Thracian Bulgarians against the Ottoman rule, organized by the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Organization in 1903. The event will be held on July 19 at the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. Organizers of the event are the Faculty of History of Sofia University, the Institute for Historical Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) and the Macedonian Scientific Institute, in partnership with the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).

The Ilinden-Preobrazhenie uprising was a Bulgarian uprising, it was Bulgarians who rose up, starting it, Prof. Mira Markova, Dean of the Faculty of History of the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, told a BTA-hosted press conference in Sofia. “For us, historians, it is very important to recall the historical truth, because we deal with objectivity, facts, and always rely on the truth”, Markova emphasized. The press conference was dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising and the forthcoming solemn scientific session to mark this anniversary.

Prof. Nadya Manolova-Nikolova, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of History of the St Kliment Ohridski University, Prof. Georgi Nikolov, Chairperson of the Macedonian Scientific Institute, Assoc. Prof. Aleksandar Grebenarov of the Institute for Historical Research at BAS and BTA Director General Kiril Valchev also attended the press conference.

Valchev said that there is a National Committee to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising. BTA correspondent in Skopje Marinela Velichkova is the news agency’s representative in the Committee.

The scientific session will be attended by foreign guests, such as Assoc. Prof. Gabor Demeter from Hungary, Prof.  Memli Krasniqi from Kosovo and Prof. Jaroslaw Rubacha from Poland, as well as by prof. Georgi Minchev from the University of Lodz in Poland.

The Bulgarians and Macedonia documentary, directed by Milena Getova, will be displayed at the session. On July 20, the participants will visit the town of Malko Tarnovo and the Petrova Niva historic area (Southwestern Bulgaria).
