Court administration workers in the Republic of North Macedonia threaten a strike beginning September 1, if their demands, including higher pay, are not met. Angry workers protested once again in Skopje on Thursday to make heard their complaints.
Jasmina Velichkova, chairperson of the Independent Trade Union of Judicial Administration Workers, said that they do not accept the 10% pay raise agreed between the government and the union leaders. They don't even agree with the K-15 additional benefits for paid annual leave of 10,000 denars. "It is outrageous that the proposal to increase the salary supplements by 15% was rejected," she said. Renata Georgievska, vice-president of the Judicial Administration Workers' Association, demanded reforms in the judiciary and called for a new law on the judicial budget to be submitted so that it has an independent budget.
If an effective strike were to take place, the protesters vowed that they would not issue certificates of conviction status and other documents for which people are charged and with which the courts generate revenue for the state budget. They also threatened civil disobedience, including street closures.
