The expected winner of Sunday's parliamentary elections in Greece - the leader of the centre-right New Democracy party Kyriakos Mitsotakis, cast his vote Athens. He told a crowd of reporters that "today the citizens and democracy have the floor and it is a day for joy and responsibility".
Mitsotakis expressed his hopes that the voter turnout on June 25 will be higher than the turnout on May 21.
According to the polls, his party is leading. It was also the winner in May, but the results did not allow it to form an independent government. This time, the vote will be judged by a different electoral system that gives extra seats to the first party. Thus, New Democracy could govern on its own from next week if voters trust it again.
