Sofia celebrates on Saturday the 147th anniversary of its liberation from Ottoman rule. As a tribute from the Sofia Municipality, wreaths will be laid at the monuments to the Bulgarian Volunteer, the Tsar Liberator, and to General Gurko, the press centre of the Sofia Municipality said.

At noon, a historical reenactment will take place in the North Park, organized by the Nadezhda district and the United Balkans Association.

In the Saint Nedelya Cathedral, a thanksgiving prayer will be said by His Holiness the Metropolitan of Sofia and Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil in memory of the fallen soldiers.

The Regional History Museum - Sofia refreshes the historical events of the Liberation of Sofia on its website.

On January 4, 1878, the first Russian troops entered Sofia - units of the Western detachment of the Russian army under the command of Gen. Gurko. They were greeted by the citizens of Sofia on St. Nedelya Square, and the teacher Mihail Bubotinov welcomed him on behalf of the citizens of Sofia with a special speech. In the St. Nedelya Cathedral, a thanksgiving service was held in honour of the Russian soldiers in the presence of Lieutenant General Iosif Gurko and Major General Otton Rauch.
