Sofia, March 19 (BTA) - The Central Election Commission (CEC) on Tuesday reported on its five-year term-in-office which began on March 20 2014. During its term CEC organized five national elections, two national referendums, 119 partial elections. It assisted in the organization of 14 local referendums, said CEC Chair Ivilina Alexieva.

In all elections CEC registered 126 parties and 30 coalitions. In the European elections and the presidential elections it also registered 17 nominating committees. CEC also handled the registration of observers of elections in the country and abroad, of party agents and of polling agencies.

In the course of its term CEC held 719 meetings and adopted over 5,170 decisions. Between 2014 and 2019 333,097 people were involved in the organization of elections. The Commission handled 2,575 complaints, opened 61,664 voting sections, while the printed ballot papers were 78 million. A total of 22,982,916 votes were cast.

In the four national elections CEC appointed a total of 124 district election commissions and 1,910 sectional election commissions abroad and in the local elections - 265 municipal election commissions.

According to Ivilina Alexieva, machine voting and cyber security are the main challenges before the new commission. The procurement tender for the voting machines is ready and will be announced shortly.

Some of the current members of the Commission will continue to work in the new commission. Former constitutional judge Stefka Stoeva is expected to replace Alexieva as CEC chair. IG/PP
