More than Half of Bulgarians Unwilling
to Trade Damage to Protected Areas
for Economic Development
Brussels, May 6 (BTA correspondent Nikolay Jeliazkov) - More than half of Bulgarians believe that economic development should not damage wildlife in protected areas such as those in Natura 2000, according to a Eurobarometer survey carried out among 27,643 respondents in the 28 EU Member States between December 4 and 20, 2018.
As many as 51 per cent of the Bulgarians interviewed insist that economic development in protected areas should be prohibited, and 45 per cent would agree to such development only for projects of major public interest and if the damage is fully compensation through restoration or mitigation measures.
A total of 41 per cent of the Bulgarian respondents have heard of the Natura 2000 network and know about it (compared to 11 per cent in the EU28), and 35 per cent have heard of it but do not know what it is (19 per cent in EU28). Seventy per cent agree that people have a responsibility to look after nature. Asked about the biggest threats to biodiversity, the respondents ranked, in this order, air, soil and water pollution (69 per cent), man-made disasters (68 per cent), and climate change (57 per cent).
