The Cabinet adopted a decision on Wednesday to give consent to the opening of a Canadian consulate in the Republic of Bulgaria, headed by an honorary consular official, and to give consent to Nina Mihaylova Lazarova to perform the functions of Canada's honorary consular official in Bulgaria. She will be based in Sofia and have a consular district covering the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria.

Lazarova is a Bulgarian citizen, fluent in English and French. In December 2019, she was appointed Honorary Consular Officer of Canada for the Republic of Bulgaria for a period of 5 years. In a note at the end of 2024, the Canadian Government notified its wish to appoint her as Honorary Consul in Bulgaria for a larger period.

The continuation of Canada's Honorary Consul in Bulgaria will support efforts to further expand and strengthen bilateral relations.
