The fifty-first edition of the Sofia International Book Fair opened on Tuesday evening at Sofia’s National Palace of Culture convention centre.

This year more than 100 publishers are represented with over 100,000 editions. “Every fair is a real celebration of books, literature and all of us who are here, said Desislava Alexieva,” chair of the Bulgarian Book Association (BBA).

I am not a minister of culture today, I am a book-loving person, Minister of Culture Nayden Todorov said. In his words, where there is literature, there is a nation.

Traditionally, the Golden Lion Book Publishing Awards were presented at the ceremony. The best publishing project was awarded to Bulgarian History Publishing House for “Bulgarian Grammar" by Neofit Rilski and Petar Beron’s “Fish Primer”.

The prize for the publishing project with the greatest public significance went to "The Gardener and Death" by Georgi Gospodinov from Janet 45 Publishing House.

The Sofia International Book Fair will be on until 15 December. Along with its 51st edition, the 12th Sofia International Literary Festival and the First Non-Fiction Festival "Science, Art and Culture" will take place at the National Palace of Culture.
