Customs officials found more than 3 kg of cocaine during an inspection of a truck leaving the country through Kapitan Andreevo Border Crossing, the Customs Agency said on Monday. The offence was detected in a joint operation between the Customs Agency, Directorate General Combating Organised Crime, Border Police Directorate General and the National Revenue Agency to counter smuggling.

The truck had a Turkish registration number and was driven by a Turkish citizen. The vehicle, travelling from the Netherlands and Germany via Bulgaria to Turkiye, was selected for a thorough customs check. In the course of the check, customs officials discovered that three packages were concealed in the refrigerator located in the driver's cabin. On opening one of the packages, they detected the presence of a white powdery substance which reacted positive for cocaine. The total quantity of cocaine found and seized was 3,240 grams, valued at BGN 1,018,656.

During the check, the driver attempted to flee in the direction of Turkiye and was detained by customs officers.

Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case by an investigating customs inspector under the supervision of the Haskovo District Prosecution Office.
