Seven years ago today, Bulgarian climber Boyan Petrov scaled the 8,035 m summit Gasherbrum II. It is the 13th highest mountain in the world and the third-highest peak of the Gasherbrum massif in the Karakoram, on the border between Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan and China.

It was Petrov's 9th 8,000-m summit. The successful climb came only 11 months after Petrov was severely injured in a road accident.

Petrov was a diabetic.

Less than a year later, on May 7, 2018, he was reported missing in Shishapangma in the Tibet Autonomous Region. A large-scale search and rescue operation was organized with the participation of Chinese mountaineers, Sherpa mountain guides and Nepalese helicopters but Petrov could not be found and the operation was called off on May 11.

Petrov was widely believed to have been Bulgaria's most successful mountaineer. In 2017, he became the first Bulgarian to have reached ten 8,000-m summits.
