Bulgaria will spend 2.18% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on defence in 2024, according to NATO defence expenditure data released ahead of the Alliance Summit in Washington, D.C., in July.

Bulgaria's defence expenditure in 2024 stands at USD 2.325 billion, up from USD 1.992 billion in 2023. The figures point to a steady increase since 2020.

The average strength of the Armed Forces has decreased by 0.6% since 2014, when NATO Heads of State and Government agreed to commit 2% of their national GDP to defence spending.
