Most Bulgarians are dissatisfied with the justice system in this country, according to data from the EU Justice Scoreboard 2024 released by the European Commission on Tuesday.

The EU Justice Scoreboard is an annual overview providing comparative data on the efficiency, quality, and independence of justice systems among the EU Member States. 

A total of 34% of Bulgarian respondents perceive the independence of courts and judges in the country as very bad, and 31% perceive it as fairly bad. As many as 22% stated that the independence of the Bulgarian justice system is fairly good, and 2% rated it as very good. One in ten respondents does not know.

Of the Bulgarian companies that took part in the poll, 18% are very unconfident in the effectiveness of investment protection by the law and courts, and 37% are fairly unconfident. A total of 34% stated that they are fairly confident, and 9% are very confident.

Bulgaria ranks third among EU Member States in terms of swiftness in resolving administrative cases at all court instances. The country is preceded by Sweden and Hungary, the data show. Bulgaria has the best indicators in the EU as far as the speed of the delivery of first-instance verdicts in corruption (bribery) cases. According to the survey, digital technology is poorly implemented by the Bulgarian prosecution service and courts. Only Malta, the Czech Republic, and Greece of the rest of the EU Member States performed worse.
