Bulgaria Starts Road
Toll System
for Trucks and Buses

Sofia, March 1 (BTA) - Following Sunday's launch of the road toll system for heavy-duty trucks and buses in Bulgaria, Deputy Regional Development and Public Works Minister Nikolay Nankov said, as quoted by his ministry, that the system is running smoothly and the situation is calm. He and National Toll Administration Director Oleg Asenov inspected the launch of the system at the Kalotina border control checkpoint.

It transpires from Nankov's words that National Toll Administration employees are stationed at Bulgaria's border control checkpoints to assist drivers, if necessary, in the purchase and filling of the route maps, which are one of the options for road tolling.
It takes no more than four to five minutes to fill in these maps, he said.

He went on to say that a toll is due for using Bulgaria's motorways and first-class roads, and the tariff in this country is the lowest in Europe. For example, in Serbia the most common heavy-duty vehicles pay around 90 euro for the distance between Kalotina and the Hungarian border, while in Bulgaria they pay around 20 euro for the distance between Kalotina and Kapitan Andreevo.

The road toll system was launched after several postponements and reductions in the toll's amount and the system's coverage introduced following negotiations between the Government and the discontented transport branch. The sides agreed that should the revenues generated by the system are below those planned in the budget, three months after the system's launch the toll and the coverage will be indexed.

Asenov said that at every border crossing there are information boards about the location and distance to the nearest route map sales point and to a place where drivers can get a consultation about the road toll system. There are also boards listing the sanctions the drivers face for not complying with the new rules.
