NATO is a defence alliance and has no plans to take part in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev said in Kozloduy (Northwest Bulgaria) on Wednesday.

His comments were made in reference to President Rumen Radev's statement that "the hasty reactions of our politicians and our institutions that Bulgaria will not send troops to Ukraine mean absolutely nothing if any other NATO Member State provokes a direct clash with Russia".

Glavchev explained that in a one-on-one conversation with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, he said that "the art, in fact, and the goal is how, by helping Ukraine, not to involve NATO.

"The President referred to Article 5 [of the North Atlantic Treaty], he said that any NATO country, if attacked, would be protected by the entire alliance. That is right - if attacked, it will be protected, but none of the NATO countries have any intention of attacking Russia. This was underlined by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg," Glavchev stressed.
