Petya Dimitrova received the Young Artist of the Year Award by the Burgas Society of Artists on last Friday. She was nominated for the award for the third year running. The artist said the title is "an honour and responsibility" for her. "It tells me that the path I have chosen is the right one," Dimitrova said in her acceptance speech.
Dimitrova is a native of Varna and a graduate of the local art school there. She graduated in Painting at the Veliko Tarnovo University. She admits that in recent years she has been particularly drawn to church painting. "No matter how canonical church art is, everyone carries faith in their own way and everyone can find a way to express it. This is my way," she added.
The other nominees for the Young Artist of the Year title were Yulia Krasovska and Valcho Valchev.
The winner was decided by a nine-member jury, said the Chair of the Burgas Society of Artists, Dobrin Vatev. The award, which is named after the renowned Burgas-based artist Rusi Stoyanov and is traditionally given on May 24, was presented to Dimitrova by Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov and Rusi Stoyanov's grandson, Bozhidar Rusev.
"This award inspires and motivates young artists and creates a sense of continuity. I am convinced that, inspired by Burgas, the sea and the surroundings, the artists create even better works," Mayor Nikolov said during the award ceremony.
