A cardiac surgery ward opened on Monday at the Medica Hospital in Ruse, said Prof Dr Kiril Panayotov, Manager of Medica Medical Institutions. Ruse is now the 6th city in the country with a cardiac surgery ward.
In the last three years Medica Hospital has been the country's leader in terms of number of patients who has undergone invasive cardiology, Panayotov said. He added that in 2023 the hospital had to refer three to four patients weekly to other hospitals for cardiac surgery. "Now this will not be necessary and patients will be able to receive timely treatment in one of the country's clinics with state-of-the-art equipment," he said.
The equipment of the new ward cost over BGN 6 Million.
The head of the new ward, Dr. Georgi Ignatov, has worked in clinics in Great Britain and the USA, as well as in the Lozenetz University Hospital in Sofia. Ignatov said that the new department in Ruse will offer the full range of cardiac surgery except for treatment of children with cardiac malformations and transplants. It will also offer surgical treatment of pulmonary hypertension. Before that, the nearest country Bulgarians could get the procedure was in Austria.
