Heavy rains in the past days have increased the water level and flow rate of the Maritsa and Tundzha rivers, which spring in Bulgaria and pass through the southwestern Turkish region of Edirne.

According to information by the regional water directorate, the Maritsa's flow rate dropped to 35 cubic metres per second in early November but has since risen to 68 m3/s due to last week's showers. The Tundzha's flow rate doubled after the rain to 6 m3/s.

The rising water levels have swallowed the little sand islands along the two rivers, formed by drought.
