Deputy Foreign Minister Tihomir Stoychev received Chinese Ambassador to Bulgaria Dong Xiaojun, the ministry said on its website on Wednesday. The meeting was held in the spirit of mutual willingness to strengthen bilateral friendly relations. The year 2024 will mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and China.

"Bulgaria highly values its traditional friendly relations with China, which were elevated to the level of strategic partnership in 2019," Stoychev said. The two sides shared their willingness to enhance ties and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The deputy minister stressed the need to deepen cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, transport, agriculture and education. "We should work together to overcome the negative trade balance and facilitate the procedures for importing Bulgarian agricultural products and foodstuffs to China," Stoychev pointed out.

The two officials discussed high-level contacts, including exchange of visits, political consultations between the foreign ministries, and the next session of the Bulgarian-Chinese Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation.

Ambassador Xiaojun met with Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov on July 25. They discussed the opportunities for expanding Bulgarian exports to China. Xiaojun said that China is among Bulgaria's largest trading partners, but there is huge potential for increasing Bulgarian exports to there.
