The Bulgarian city of Gabrovo, North Central Bulgaria, twinned with the Japanese city of Toyoake, the Municipality of Gabrovo said on its website on Tuesday. The cooperation agreement was signed by Gabrovo Mayor Tanya Hristova and her Toyoake counterpart Masafumi Kouki at the Japanese Embassy in Sofia. The two sides will cooperate in economics, science, technology, culture, education, sports, youth activities, among other areas of mutual interest.

For six years now, Gabrovo Municipality implements an educational exchange of young people with Toyoake, with the two cities sharing cuisine, culture, and traditions.

Gabrovo is also twinned with Aalst (Belgium), Kumanovo (North Macedonia), Mittweida (Germany), Mytishchi (Russia), Mogilev (Belarus), Nowy Sącz (Poland), Panevėžys (Lithuania), Petah Tikva (Israel), Prešov (Slovakia), Sisak (Croatia), Thun (Switzerland), Chernihiv (Ukraine), Sheki (Azerbaijan), Kutaisi in Georgia, Shaoxing (China) and Quanzhou (China).
