At end-June 2023, the central government debt amounts to BGN 37.6 billion, decreasing by BGN 187.9 million, as compared to end-May 2023. The domestic debt amounts to BGN 11.1 billion and the external debt amounts to BGN 26.5 billion, the Finance Ministry reported on Monday.

At the end of the reporting period, the central government debt/gross domestic product (GDP) ratio was 20.4%, with the share of domestic debt being 6.0% and that of the external debt being 14.4%. In June 2023, the domestic and external debt shares in the central government debt structure stood at 29.6% and 70.4%, respectively.

Regarding the debt structure by instruments as of June 30, 2023, the main share continued to belong to bonds issued on international capital markets – 54.2%, followed by government securities issued on the domestic market – 28.6%, and loans – 17.2%. As regards the interest structure of debt, the trend for predominance of debt with fixed interest rate (98.4%) was preserved; as regards the currency structure of debt, the debt instruments denominated in EUR and BGN continued to have a large relative share (99.9%).

As regards the maturity structure of debt by original maturity, the debt instruments with maturity of over 10 years have the largest share – 59.5%, followed by those with maturity from 5 to 10 years – 29.8%, and those with maturity from 1 year to 5 years – 10.8%. As regards the structure by residual maturity, the share of debt up to 1 year accounts for 2%, that from 1 year to 5 years accounts for 38.1%, the debt from 5 to 10 years accounts for 33.7% and that over 10 years accounts for 26.3%.

As of June 30, 2023, the central government guaranteed debt was BGN 674.9 million. Domestic guarantees amounts to BGN 59.3 million and external guarantees – to BGN 615.7 million. The central government guaranteed debt/GDP ratio is 0.4%.

According to the official register of government and government guaranteed debt, kept by the Finance Ministry, at end-June 2023, the government debt reached BGN 36.7 billion, being 19.9% of GDP. Domestic debt amounts to nearly BGN 11 billion, and external debt stood at some BGN 25.7 million.  

In June 2023, the government guaranteed debt amounts to EUR 1.58 billion; domestic guarantees amounts to BGN 59.3 million, with the government guaranteed debt/GDP ratio being 0.9%, the Finance Ministry also reported.
