It cannot be said that the Bulgarian state was the saviour of the Bulgarian Jews during the Holocaust because that state created the system which stood behind their harassment, but there were individuals who helped rescue the Jews, Viktor Melamed, Director of the office of the American Jewish Committee in Sofia, said during the 17th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, which was organized by BTA.
