Social Minister Kalfin: Income Differences,
Poverty Are Increasing in Spite of
Bulgaria's EU Membership
Sofia, November 24 (BTA) - EU membership did not stop income
differences, poverty and social inequality from increasing, the
Deputy Prime Minister for Demographic and Social Policies and
Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Ivailo Kalfin, said
Monday. He was attending the presentation of the report on
"Monitoring Bulgaria's EU Membership - 2013-2014". The report
was drawn up by Bulgarian experts under a project of the
Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the European Policy Forum.
The EU is not to blame for the exacerbation of these problems
and now Bulgaria is using a number of mechanisms of the Union to
tone down these effects. However, many things depend on the
people themselves and on the work of Bulgarian institutions.
The new European Commission is working on a 300,000 million euro
plan for economic revival and Bulgaria has sent projects to be
financed under this plan. What is more important now is to have
an own plan for economic growth and to regard European policy as
an opportunity and a tool to achieve our goals, Kalfin
underscored.
Stating that European Socialists are focused on more social
elements and criteria in EU policies, Kalfin said it is neither
productive nor normal for just fiscal elements to determine
them. Growth in the next few years will not rush forward, it
will be painful and slow, and these will be the conditions in
which social policy will have to be conducted, he added.
Regine Schubert, Director of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation
chapter in Bulgaria, said the project has a long history
including both Bulgaria's preparation for EU membership and the
membership itself. It is important to ask why there are many
problems in Bulgaria. The country continues to face corruption,
organized crime and lack of transparency in the judicial system,
as well as impoverishment of additional groups of the
population. The study presented now not only describes the
problems but also offers solutions, she added./LI/BR/
