Court Repeals Education Minister's Order to Appoint Acting Rector of Svishtov Academy of Economics

Veliko Turnovo, Central Bulgaria, January 4 (BTA) - The Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) repealed Education Minister Todor Tanev's order to appoint an acting rector of the D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics in Svishtov (on the Danube). SAC's decision was published on the court's website on Monday.

The decision of the three-member court panel states that Tanev's order to appoint Prof. Ivan Vurbanov as the Academy's acting rector is repealed in response to a complaint submitted by the Academy's elected rector, Teodora Dimitrova Petrova. The Education Ministry is ordered to pay Petrova 510 leva in court costs.

SAC's decision can be appealed within 14 days before a five-member SAC court panel.

Kalin Kostov, who chairs the association for European quality in post-secondary education, said here last week that, following an audit report, the Svishtov Regional Prosecution Office has initiated three pre-trial proceedings for malfeasance in office against the Academy's former leadership. The audit was assigned at the request of the Academy's acting rector Prof. Ivan Vurbanov, and covers the period from July 2012 until July 2015. An acting rector was appointed at the Academy by order of the Education Minister, due to the ongoing court battles between the former and current senior academic management.
