Bulgarian PM, Court of Justice President Discuss Progress of Judicial Reform

Sofia, September 21 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov Wednesday met with the President of the European Court of Justice, Koen Lenaerts, who is paying a visit to Bulgaria on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Constitutional Court, the government information service said.

Borissov and Justice Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva acquainted Lenaerts with the progress of judicial reform after the passage of the revisions to the Constitution and the two packages of amendments to the Judicial Power Act. Judge Lenaerts expressed support for the reforms implemented by the government.

The two sides agreed that the most important thing now that the revisions have become effective, is their enforcement.

Lenaerts underscored the excellent impression made by Prof. Evgeni Tanchev and Assoc. Prof. Alexander Kornezof at the hearings for advocate general and judge at the Court. Both were officially sworn in officially September 1 at a solemn meeting in Luxembourg. It was pointed out that the Bulgarian government has nominated jurists of international authority and impeccable reputation.
