Bulgarian IDs  to Contain Biometric Data, E-signature

Sofia, December 8 (BTA) - Chips will be placed on Bulgarian ID cards, which will contain biometric data, electronic identity certificates and e-signatures, Parliament decided on Thursday by adopting on second reading amendments to the Bulgarian Identity Documents Act.

The amendments will become effective starting January 1, 2018. All Bulgarian IDs issued prior to this date will be valid until they expire.

The biometric information will be contained in a separate protected segment of the chip, in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organization's recommendations, if the person applying for the document has expressed such a desire.

According to the amendments, applicants can decline the inclusion of biometric data, e-identity certificate or an e-signature on their ID documents.

Passports and residence permits can also contain such electronic information.
