Caretaker Cabinet - Minister
Kozloduy, Northwestern Bulgaria, September 5 (BTA) - Extending
the service life of power units 5 and 6 at the Kozlodiy nuclear
power plant is the most important priority of the caretaker
cabinet and of the Economy and Energy Ministry, which will allow
considering options for building new facilities, Economy and
Energy Minister Vassil Shtonov said here on Thursday during an
official meeting commemorating the 40th anniversary since the
commissioning of the first reactor at the plant, now shut down.
In his address at the meeting, Shtonov said that the Kozloduy
N-plant is a very important energy facility for Bulgaria which
produces the environmentally cleanest power, and also the
cheapest, 50 leva/MWh, which contributes in the development of
the competitiveness of the Bulgarian economy. Shtonov said the
staff of the plant should feel proud with what they have
achieved because the Kozloduy N-plant has been recognized as one
of the safest nuclear power plants in the world.
Power unit 1 of the plants was built only five years after the
start of the project. The reactor was commissioned on June 30,
1974, and switched on the national power grid a month later, on
July 24. The official opening of the reactor took place in
September 4, 1974. In the 40 years since then, the Kozloduy
N-plant has generated more than 550 million MWh of power, and
saved 20 million t of CO2 emissions annually. SN /ZH/
