Course of First Balkan Cross-border Ultramarathon Will Be 196 Km Long

Assenovgrad, Southern Bulgaria, January 16 (BTA) - The course of the first Balkan cross-border ultramarathon TransRhodope between Bulgaria and Greece will be 196 km long. This emerged at an inaugural working meeting at the initiative of Assenovgrad Mayor Emil Karaivanov. Participating were the mayors of the municipalities Chepelare Luki and Smolyan, representatives of the border police and the organizers of the Bulgarian Ultramarathon Association.

The course of TransRhodope will pass through five Bulgarian municipalities, Assenovgrad, Chepelare, Luki, Devin and Smolyan, and will end in Paranesti, Greece. Forty per cent of it will be forest trails and 60 per cent dirt roads. It will have 13 aid stations.

The ultramarathon will take place in June 2017 after organizers obtain all requisite permits from the interior ministries of Bulgaria and Greece.
