Russian Archbishop Seraphim Solemnly Glorified as Saint

Sofia, February 26 (BTA) - Archbishop Seraphim (Sobolev) of Boguchar (1881-1950), buried in the crypt of the Russian Church in Sofia, was solemnly glorified as Saint Seraphim of Sofia the Miracle-worker on Friday. The solemn glorification took place in St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, with the participation of Bulgarian Patriarch Neophyte, metropolitans of the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and a delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church headed by the Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk.

A meeting of the Joint Commission of the Bulgarian and Russian Orthodox Churches on the canonization of Archbishop Seraphim (Sobolev) of Boguchar was held on December 3-4 in Sofia. Archbishop Seraphim was a hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church who lived for many years in Bulgaria and has been venerated by Bulgarian Orthodox believers for the past 65 years. His feast day has been set at February 26, the day on which he died.

A patriarchal and synodal address relevant to the glorification of the new saint was read to the clergy and the laymen. This was followed by a solemn liturgy.

Among other things, Archbishop Sobolev is the author of valuable theological works and sermons, as well as of an akathist hymn dedicated to St. John of Rila.

Even when he was alive, many miracles occurred thanks to his prayers and helped people in difficult situations or in the case of illness.
