US Ambassador Rubin: US Investors in Bulgaria Show Model that Could Serve as Example

Sofia, March 2 (BTA) - The American companies investing in Bulgaria millions of dollars in various community care centres, education, health care and the environment are showing a model that could serve as an example, said here on Thursday US Ambassador to Bulgaria Eric Rubin during a business luncheon, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria (AmCham).

Ambassador Rubin underscored the role of corporate and social responsibility demonstrated by the US investors. In addition to conducting business, these companies also contribute to the community's well-being, which he described as a positive model.

The US diplomat thanked AmCham for their efforts supporting growth, prosperity and the creation of jobs, stressing the latter as being among main priorities.

Rubin noted that the Bulgarian economy is growing by close to three per cent annually, which is a good indicator for companies wishing to invest in this country, adding that bilateral trade has reached USD 1.5 billion in 2015.

The US Ambassador listed some of the important initiatives, such as the renovation of the pediatric ward at Sofia's Pirogov hospital, which was made possible with help from private investors, the summer work and travel program in the US, which has attracted a large number of young Bulgarians, among others. Opportunities for exchanging students and PhD students are offered, he said, adding that education is becoming a very important priority for the US. According to Rubin, there are 32 young American citizens teaching in various Bulgarian schools.

These times of crises and challenges are also times of opportunities for Bulgarian-US relations, he commented, adding that both societies share the same values and goals, such as security, peace, prosperity, freedom and democracy.

Answering a question by Atlantic Club President and former foreign minister Solomon Passy, Ambassador Rubin said that he is working and will continue to work for a visit to Bulgaria by the US President, but cannot promise anything.

AmCham Board President Krassimira Chemishanska said that the Chamber united over 340 companies, adding that it will present its White Paper, which includes economic growth, better investment climate, human capital, sustainable development and environmental protection as its priorities.

Chemishanska said that the Chamber continues communicating with the political parties and making recommendations.
