Union of Bulgarian Actors Hristo Mutafchiev Wednesday presented a concept for the renovation of eight state theatres across Bulgaria. Speaking at a press conference in BTA's National Press Club in Lovech, he noted that this kind of modernisation of theatre spaces had not been done in Bulgaria in the last 50-100 years.

Mutafchiev said that state theatres' buildings are located in the centre of every regional city in Bulgaria, and although they are impressive buildings, according to him, they are neither energy efficient, nor heated. He told the conference that the eight theatres included in the programme at this stage will be equipped with new lighting, sound and stage mechanisation. The leading candidate of the programme is the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia, while the other partners are the Ministry of Culture and the Union of Bulgarian Actors.

The programme is financed under the Programme for Development of the Regions. The investment has a total value of over BGN 7.8 million, and the implementation period is two years.

He also called on the Ministry of Culture and the Council of Ministers to have a strategy for what the Bulgarian theatres should look like in 2035, because else it will not be possible to modernise them. "We must have a strategy for our art," Mutafchiev stressed.
