Two Bulgarian University Lecturers Honoured with Sovereign Order of Malta's Award

Dean of the Faculty of History at St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, Mira Markova, and Chair of the Faculty's General Assembly and Head of the Hebraic Studies Programme Rumyana Christidi were honoured with a special award by Ursula Zucсoli, Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta, the university's press service reported on Monday.

Markova and Christidi received the honorary award for their contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and marking 30 years of diplomatic ties between the Republic of Bulgaria and the Sovereign Order of Malta.

The Sovereign Order of Malta is one of the oldest institutions of Western and Christian civilization. A religious order of the Catholic Church since 1113 and a subject of international law, it maintains diplomatic relations with over 100 countries and the European Union. It also holds permanent observer status at the United Nations. According to information on the Order’s official website, it is a neutral, impartial, and non-political organization.
