Legendary Hristo Markov and Stefka Kostadinova were named Athlete and Female Athlete of the Century by the Bulgarian Athletics Federation at an official ceremony on the centennial jubilee of the organization, held at the Asics Arena in Sofia on Wednesday.
Markov is an Olympic, World, and European champion in the triple jump. Kostadinova is an Olympic, multiple World, and European champion in the high jump. Her record of 209 cm, set at the World Championships in Rome in 1987, has stood unbroken for 37 years. Kostadinova received a personal award from the caretaker Sports Minister Georgi Glushkov.
The ceremony started with a welcome speech by Ivan Kolev, the President of the Bulgarian Athletics Federation. Many stars were present at the event, including Yordanka Blagoeva, Nikolina Shtereva, Ivet Lalova, Yanko Bratanov, Sofka Popova, Venelina Veneva, Iva Prandzheva, Tereza Marinova, Mirela Demireva, and others.
Bulgarian athletics journalists and experts named Tihomir Ivanov and Plamena Mitkova as the Male and Female Athletes of 2024. Ivanov’s eighth-place finish in the high jump at the Paris Olympic Games made him the best-performing Bulgarian athlete at the event. Mitkova shone in her long jump debut at the European Championships in Rome, securing seventh place. Her 6.97-meter leap placed her second overall in Europe for the season.
The top young athletes for 2024 and their coaches are: Radina Velichkova (Coach Iva Prandzheva), Dimo Andreev (Coach Andrian Andreev), Hristiyan Kasabov (Coach Simeon Pophlebarov), and Lachezar Valchev (Coach Krasen Tsonev).
