Bulgaria is a reliable partner of the European Nuclear Alliance countries. Nuclear energy is the clear choice on the path to decarbonization, Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov said on Tuesday at an online meeting of Nuclear Alliance ministers, quoted in a ministry statement.
Stankov stated Bulgaria's support for the Alliance's efforts to have nuclear energy recognized by the European Commission as a low-carbon baseload option that would benefit from the same advantages as other technologies that contribute to decarbonization.
"Publishing a new nuclear illustrative programme is crucial," Minister Stankov added. He said it should clearly reflect member states' plans for new nuclear capacity, funding needs, life extensions and radioactive waste management.
The Nuclear Alliance ministerial meeting discussed options for addressing the new energy challenges to decarbonization targets and the competitiveness of European economies. The key role of interconnection and energy storage infrastructures was underlined.
The European Nuclear Alliance includes Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden, as well as Belgium and Italy as observers.
