A discussion on the water and sewerage (W&S) sector, prompted by water shortages in parts of Bulgaria, was held in the National Assembly on Tuesday on the initiative of the Vazrazhdane parliamentary group. The participants discussed issues related to the sector's management, pricing disparities, legislative deficiencies, and the possibility for W&S operators to leave the associations which are in charge of selecting and overseeing them.
MP Dimcho Dimchev said the management of W&S operators is a problem of nationwide proportions. He said the consolidation of W&S operators into W&S associations was "an American scenario" aimed to put geographical areas under the management of large corporations. He said Vazrazhdane proposes legislative amendments to allow municipal-owned operators to leave the W&S associations without any restrictions.
MP Kosta Stoyanov noted that after the investment of dozens of billions of euro in the W&S system, water losses still exceed 60%.
The managers of the W&S operators in Sapareva Banya and Petrich, the deputy mayor of Petrich and the mayor of Pirdop participated in the discussion.
