Half of all disruptions to the European electricity grid in 2023 have originated from Bulgaria, revealed the Director of the Energy and Climate Program at the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) Martin Vladimirov on Tuesday. He spoke at a round table discussion on the evolution of Bulgarian power grid infrastructure. Vladimirov shared that sanctions are now being imposed on Bulgaria due to these disruptions.

He emphasized the need for urgent measures to upgrade electricity transmission and distribution networks. The European Commission introduced a comprehensive action plan containing 14 points for modernizing European electricity transmission networks as part of the electrification of the European economy, he added.

Vladimirov believes in the importance of managing the system effectively, using current conditions and technologies. He highlighted the need for significant changes in the regulatory framework to allow transmission and distribution operators to cover modernization costs.
